THE LAW - USING MOBILE PHONES IN A VEHICLE
Since
December 1st 2003 it has been an offence to use a hand-held
mobile phone whilst driving a vehicle. This offence is subject
to a £30 fine which increases
to £1,000 if the matter goes to court (£2,500 for
drivers of goods vehicles, buses or coaches). However the current
legislation is being revised to raise the penalty to a £60
fine and 3 points on their licence each time they are
caught holding a phone. Fully fitted professional carkits will
be acceptable.
The
definition of a handsfree carkit is one that is permanently
wired into the vehicle with a cradle for holding the phone and
uses one or more speakers that are permanently fixed in the
vehicle. The installation of a handsfree carkit should comply
with Government MPT 1362 Regulations.
